On June 24, kids at P.T. Barnum Apartments splashed into some cool new summer fun with the opening of the site's new playground. Boasting dynamic water spray features, the quarter million dollar Natasha Gordon Memorial Playground and Spray Shower Park gives kids a safe place to beat the summer heat. Designed for 2-5 year old children, the playground is built on bouncy safety tile surfacing and offers state-of-the-art equipment that beckons children to explore and play within a protected area. The playground is named after and dedicated to the memory of Natasha Gordon, the BHA Development Department employee who spearheaded the project for the enjoyment of children. Natasha Gordon, who passed away on March 21st, 2008 at 33 years of age, took the lead from residents who wanted something for the children, and found a way to make it happen. PT Barnum Resident Association President, Donna Fewell said she's thrilled with Natasha's park design and the creativity she used to find the necessary funding to get the project done. Natasha's parents, members of the press, housing commissioners, BHA officials, and city, state, and community leaders were in attendance for the plaque dedication and the opening of the water valve. "Today is a beautiful day," said Natasha's father Ernesto Gordon."I am so proud of my daughter. Words can't describe my feelings… to see all of these lovely people so happy. If Natasha was here, she would have been in the spray shower with them."BHA Executive Director Nicholas Calace said, " Natasha never let it slip through the cracks. She shepherded the design and construction to completion." "The new shower park is the first of a series of upgrades planned for the complex. Based on the availability of funding, we hope to provide a complete grounds-renovation, including new stairs to apartments and the re-routing of the roads through the complex."
